New York – Where To Eat (#3)

Firstly, I’m sorry if these posts have made your next New York trip a dangerously calorific one (but really, I’m not) – I promise this is the last rundown of eateries before I move onto something else and stop with all the food porn and temptation!

THE SPOTTED PIG for the best burger

So many people have said this is the best burger in town and having finally tried it for myself, I completely agree. If you visit The Spotted Pig, you absolutely have to order their chargrilled burger, complete with roquefort cheese and shoestring fries. Everything about it is delicious. The burger was perfectly cooked, the blue cheese gave it the best little kick and those fries, well, let’s just take a moment because my god they’re good! If you go in the evening then be prepared to wait for a table, I promise it’s worth it.

BEAUTY & ESSEX for date night

This is like a speakeasy but in restaurant form, which is totally what drew me to booking a table here. It’s a fairly fancy, dim lit restaurant which you get to by walking through a cute little pawn shop – a bit of a novelty I know but what can I say? I’m a total sucker for that kinda thing. This one’s definitely at the pricier end of the spectrum but it had a really cool vibe, the food was great and the setting was perfect, so it more than warranted the price. The service on the other hand was nothing to write home about – our waitress was pretty rude and unhelpful throughout, which is not ideal when you’re expected to part ways with a $20 tip at the end of it!

GELSO & GRAND for pizza & cocktails

This Italian wasn’t on our itinerary for our visit but after getting a little bit carried away at the Ides bar one night, our original plan was to head to Rubirosa for some gluten-free pizza. We arrived fairly late and to a super long queue so we decided to go on the hunt for something else nearby (whilst we didn’t eat here, I think it must be good because the place was heaving and the wait was so long! It’ll be at the top of my list for the next visit). We stumbled upon Gelso & Grand whilst walking through Little Italy and decided to give it a go as it seemed like the busiest place on the street. Their pizza choices are a little more interesting than the usuals and I picked out the poached pear and three cheese which was completely delicious. Plus, they did one of the best Aperol spritzes I’ve ever had so y’know, it’s a winner just for that!

SHAKE SHACK for a quick fix

Now I already know I don’t need to say much on this one because regardless of whether you’ve been lucky enough to visit NYC or not, you probably know that Shake Shack is the bomb. As in, if you’re looking for the best fast food burgers and shakes then you really needn’t consider anywhere else. We grabbed one on our first night when we were struggling to stay awake to head out for a proper sit down meal and it just instantly made everything better. We may have grabbed another in the airport whilst we waited for our flight home too (100% not sorry)…

IF YOU’RE STILL HUNGRY…

BIG GAY ICE CREAM for super yummy soft-serve

My friend Rachel recommended this one and I’m really glad she did! We’d unintentionally planned this for the warmest day that we had which made it even better.  You can add all sorts of toppings, sauces and good stuff to make whatever kind of cone you fancy. I went for sprinkles and a load of dulce de leche on top of their vanilla soft serve and it didn’t disappoint! If you’re in the city during the spring/summer then go and treat yourself to one of these ’cause calories don’t count on holiday, right?
